Registering for a business number (BN) is a critical step for any business operating in Canada. This unique identifier is required for various tax purposes, such as GST/HST, payroll deductions, and corporate income tax. Here's how to obtain one.

Start by determining if you need a business number. If you’re a sole proprietor earning less than $30,000, you may not need to register for GST. However, having a BN can streamline your business dealings with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and other agencies.

To register, you can apply online through the CRA’s Business Registration Online service, by mail, or via your provincial business registration office. During the application, you’ll need to provide details such as your business name, structure, and address.

Once your application is processed, you’ll receive your business number, which consists of nine digits followed by a program identifier and a two-digit reference. Keep this number handy, as it will be required for all your business dealings.

Registering for a BN helps you comply with tax laws and builds credibility with suppliers and clients. It’s a foundational step that can make managing your business finances much smoother in the long run.
